Materialistic youth

If being materialistic is more of the characteristics of youth, rather than one particular generation (say Gen Z), is the particular appeal of material to youth more (eg comparing with those older) because they are immature to realise the limits of the material world, or they are often don't/haven't had enough material goods, or something else...?
