Plato cautioned about appearance (illusion) in the Republic. Still it sometimes feels irony to see things (eg metrics) looks so fabulous while one knows that it is rotten inside. Would the opposite hold true too though--that sometimes things look so bleak but the foundation is strong and it will bounce back in no time?
